The Hawthorn project involved a comprehensive renovation of a charming yet run-down weatherboard home. The challenge was to blend the old with the new while maintaining the integrity of the existing structure. The home had previously been extensively renovated at the rear, so we faced hurdles such as keeping the building weather-tight and addressing uneven levels caused by subsidence. Additionally, the site presented poor soil conditions, making excavation slow and difficult.
We meticulously planned and re-planned, adapting to unforeseen issues behind the walls and ensuring clear communication with both consultants and clients. Our approach involved working closely with experienced trades to protect the front section of the home while executing a modern extension. This careful balance preserved the character of the formal lounge and other newly decorated rooms.
Special features of this renovation include a striking custom-made full-height window with a high-raked ceiling and stacked bond brickwork at the rear. The extension showcases premium materials such as Damatsas honed stone with waterfall edging for the kitchen island, engineered timber flooring, and 100% New Zealand wool carpet in the bedrooms for added comfort. Additional highlights include VELUX skylights, commercial-grade aluminium windows with retractable flyscreens, and integrated appliances. The combination of modern design with traditional elements, like Weathertex cladding and brushed Swiss brass tapware, creates a seamless and elegant transition between the old and new.
